Background

Hitachi Construction Machinery of Japan has announced plans to open a Global Development Centre in Hubballi-Dharwad, Karnataka. The new centre will create 200 jobs in engineering by 2027. Karnataka has an investor-friendly climate, which allowed it to persuade Hitachi to locate there instead of other foreign destinations, such as Southeast Asia.

In a visit to Tokyo, a government delegation headed by Karnataka government Industries Minister M B Patil held talks with the Hitachi officials over the investor-friendly policies of the state. The benefits of the new Industrial Policy of Karnataka were shared, where special incentives are given for the establishment of research and manufacturing units.

Hitachi’s Dharwad unit already plays a key role as an export hub, supplying products to West Asia, Africa, and Southeast Asia. The new development centre will further boost Karnataka’s position as an industrial leader.

The delegation also met with other major companies. Asahi Kasei, which is setting up an airbag components factory in Bengaluru, was urged to expand into sectors like textiles, electronics, and chemicals.

Karnataka also emphasized its status as the semiconductor capital of India while discussing with Renesas, a leading semiconductor firm. Renesas said its R&D facility in Bengaluru is now its largest in India, with over half its workforce focused on advanced research and software. The delegation encouraged Renesas to consider Mysuru for future expansion.

Also, Yamaha Robotics was enticed to establish a local assembly plant in Bengaluru. This would assist the company in meeting the rising demand in India without having to depend on imports only.

These measures indicate the effort by Karnataka to promote its industrial foundation and facilitate innovation and employment.
