Background
Meta has introduced WhatsApp Business Tools MCP, a server that connects AI coding agents such as Claude, Cursor, Codex and ChatGPT with the WhatsApp Business Platform.
The tool simplifies how developers set up and test business messaging through conversational prompts, cutting the need to switch between Meta’s Developer Console, Business Manager, API documentation and code editors.
Through the integration, developers can direct an AI agent to configure WhatsApp Business messaging from start to finish. The agent checks an account’s Terms of Service status, creates a WhatsApp Business Account, adds a phone number, verifies it through a one time password and registers it for the Cloud API.
The tool also manages message templates, letting developers describe what they need so the agent can create or edit templates and report approval status.
For testing, the server sends messages from registered numbers to confirm integrations work and helps configure callback URLs and webhook subscriptions. It further checks prerequisites including Terms of Service acceptance, payment methods and Business Verification, guiding users toward any incomplete step.
Meta confirmed the MCP carries built in authentication and access controls, requiring users to sign in through Facebook Login for Business and grant specific scopes so access tokens stay out of prompt history.
The company separated this tool from its Meta Social Technologies MCP, which centers on Graph API discovery and documentation searches. WhatsApp Business Tools MCP targets development and testing workflows and is rolling out gradually across Claude, Codex and ChatGPT.
