Bharatanatyam is among the oldest and most honourable classifications in India. It was started in ancient temples and eventually transformed into an international form of art, having combined old forms with new expression. The journey depicted here centres around Smt. Amrita Ghosh, who is the teacher, guide and carrier of this cultural flame. She has spent more than a couple of decades ensuring that this ancient legacy is not lost.
Honouring Tradition, Embracing Innovation
With 20+ years of experience in Bharatanatyam, Creative Dance, and Rabindrik Dance, Amrita Ghosh has not only mastered the classical form but has also reimagined how it can be taught and shared in today’s world. Her work reflects a rare balance between deep-rooted tradition and thoughtful innovation.
Her contribution to the field has now earned her recognition for Excellence in Classical Dance Education & Mentorship during the Pride of Maharashtra Awards 2026, a title that truly reflects her lifelong commitment to shaping young dancers, both technically and emotionally.
The Birth of Manjeerah: A Dream Turned into Reality
Amrita Ghosh began her teaching journey in 2005 in Kolkata with her dream project, Manjeerah, a classical and creative dance academy founded with a clear purpose: to preserve Bharatanatyam while nurturing artistic growth in every student.
Years later, in 2023, Manjeerah was reestablished in Pune under her special guidance, marking a new chapter in her mission to spread Indian classical dance across regions.
Manjeerah is not just a dance school. It is a structured institution dedicated to Bharatanatyam, deeply rooted in Natya Shastra. The academy offers disciplined training in both theory and practice, helping students move from basic steps to artistic maturity. Certification and performance opportunities such as Arangetram (master-level courses) are provided under two renowned international universities.
Beyond dance education, Manjeerah focuses on holistic development, improving physical fitness, coordination, emotional expression, and self-discipline. “For me, dance is not only movement; it is character-building,” she shares.
A Teacher Guided by Guru–Shishya Parampara
At the core of Amrita Ghosh’s teaching philosophy is the Guru–Shishya Parampara, the sacred teacher-student tradition. She believes true learning happens through personal connection, guidance, and trust.
Her training emphasizes Abhinaya (expression) and Adavus (foundational steps), helping students understand not just how to dance, but how to feel and communicate through movement. “At our academy, every learner is encouraged to explore emotions, storytelling, and cultural depth,” she shares.
Students under her mentorship consistently achieve strong results in board examinations and win Best Performer awards in competitions. They also study Natya Shastra, gaining insight into India’s ancient artistic heritage.
More importantly, they grow into confident, disciplined individuals, physically strong, mentally focused, and emotionally connected to their roots.
Blending Tradition with Technology
While Bharatanatyam is deeply grounded in human expression, Amrita embraces modern tools to enhance learning. Artificial Intelligence and virtual techniques are now part of her teaching ecosystem.
Through AI-assisted movement analysis, students can improve posture, gestures, and expressions with greater accuracy. Nearly 90% of young Bharatanatyam learners today use AI support to refine their technical skills.
This integration of tradition and technology has also helped expand global interest in Indian classical dance, which is growing at nearly 18% annually on international platforms.
With online classes, live-streamed sessions, digital workshops, and one-to-one interactive coaching, students from across the world can now learn Bharatanatyam directly from her, without relocating.
Through Manjeerah, she ensures India’s cultural heritage reaches national and international audiences, even when physical presence is not possible.
Building Stronger Individuals Through Dance
For Amrita Ghosh, dance education goes far beyond performance. She believes Bharatanatyam teaches discipline, emotional balance, focus, and resilience. Her students are not only trained dancers, they become grounded individuals who carry tradition within them.
By combining classical training with modern learning methods, she prepares students to succeed on stage and in life.
A Legacy of Education, Culture, and Care
Amrita Ghosh’s journey reflects dedication, patience, and purpose. From starting Manjeerah in Kolkata to expanding it in Pune, from preserving Natya Shastra to embracing AI, she continues to evolve while staying true to her roots.
Her recognition for Excellence in Classical Dance Education & Mentorship stands as a tribute to her unwavering efforts in shaping future generations of dancers.
Today, through Manjeerah, she continues to nurture talent, strengthen cultural identity, and build bridges between tradition and modernity.
For her, Bharatanatyam is not just an art form, it is a lifelong promise to preserve India’s heritage, one student at a time.
