Background

The strategic collaboration between Jupiter Wagons Ltd., Lucchini RS Holding, and SIMEST is aimed at setting up the country’s first integrated railwheel manufacturing facility in the private sector. This is expected to enable production of railway wheels, axles, and wheelsets through an integrated facility.

Under this collaboration, Lucchini RS will buy a 15% share of JTRWF and SIMEST will invest in a 10% share of the same company. This total 25% investment is worth €28 million.

The partnership brings together Jupiter Wagons’ manufacturing strength and Lucchini RS’s expertise in railwheel technology, engineering and metallurgy. The companies aim to create a complete production chain, starting from raw material processing and ending with finished railway wheels, axles and wheelsets.

Jupiter Wagons said the collaboration will improve India’s ability to manufacture high-value railway components locally. It also expects the platform to support the growing domestic railway market while creating an export base that connects India more closely with global railway supply chains.

The partnership has the backing of the Italian government under the Sistema Italia framework. SIMEST will take part as an equity investor, while CDP will help Lucchini RS financially and with advice.

JTRWF’s manufacturing platform includes its operating facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and a greenfield plant being developed in Odisha. Once the Odisha unit becomes operational, the company expects it to complete the entire production process for railway wheels, axles and wheelsets, making JTRWF the country’s only fully integrated private-sector railwheel manufacturing platform.
