Background
In a major boost for campus placements, a final-year computer science student at IIT Hyderabad has secured a Rs 2.5 crore package, the highest ever in the institute’s history.
The offer went to Edward Nathan Varghese, 21, who will join Netherlands-based trading firm Optiver as a software engineer from July. Varghese converted a two-month summer internship into a pre-placement offer, making him the only student from his batch to receive a PPO from the firm.
Born in Hyderabad and later educated in Bengaluru, Varghese said his early interest in competitive programming helped him perform well in the interviews. He ranked among the top 100 programmers in the country and credited the institute’s flexible curriculum for strengthening his skills.
The milestone marks a sharp rise in placement figures at IIT Hyderabad. Until now, the highest package at the institute stood at around Rs 1 crore in 2017. Last year’s top offer was Rs 66 lakh, while in 2023 it touched Rs 90 lakh.
Companies increased the average pay by 75%, from Rs 20.8 lakh in 2024 to Rs 36.2 lakh in 2025. During the first phase of placements, which concluded in December, students received 24 international offers.
Mayur Vaidya, faculty-in-charge of the Office of Career Services, said the institute focuses on ensuring good offers for all students, not just top salaries. He added that IIT Hyderabad is giving early slots to PSUs and core engineering firms to create better opportunities for non-tech students.
So far, 196 postgraduate students out of 650 have received job offers with an average package of Rs 22 lakh. Among undergraduates, 62% of the 487 registered students have already been placed.
