Asha Bhosle, the legendary playback singer, reportedly died in Mumbai on Sunday at the age of 92, bringing an end to one of the most influential careers in Indian music. She passed away at Breach Candy Hospital, where doctors had admitted her a day earlier after she suffered extreme exhaustion and a chest infection.

Doctors confirmed that she died due to multi-organ failure following a sudden decline in her health. Her son, Anand Bhosle, confirmed the news, and her last rites are scheduled to take place in Mumbai.

Asha Bhosle was widely regarded as one of the most versatile voices in Indian cinema. Her career lasted for more than eight decades, and she recorded over 12,000 songs across several languages. She sang in a wide range of styles, including romantic melodies, cabaret numbers, ghazals, classical-based songs, qawwalis, pop, and devotional music.

Tributes poured in from across the country soon after the news broke. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called her one of India’s most iconic voices and said her music enriched the nation’s cultural heritage. Several film and music personalities also shared emotional messages, remembering her unmatched energy and timeless songs.

She was born on 8 September 1933. She started singing at a young age and recorded her first song for the Marathi film Majha Bal in 1943. Her fame grew quickly during the 1950s and 1960s, when many top music composers chose her as their main singer. She sang many famous songs like Aaiye Meherbaan, Parde Mein Rehne Do, Dum Maro Dum, and Piya Tu Ab To Aaja.

She also made her mark on the world stage by working with international artists and inspired tributes like Brimful of Asha.

Her death leaves a huge gap in Indian music, but her songs will live on for generations to come.
