Background
Reliance Industries Limited & Meta Platforms have signed a pact to develop an AI-driven data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The announcement boosted investor sentiment, helping Reliance shares gain around 2% in early trade.
Under the agreement, Reliance will build a 168-megawatt data centre that Meta will lease to support its growing artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure requirements in India. The facility will also include an option for future expansion.
Meta said the data centre will operate on renewable energy and use desalinated seawater for cooling. The company will bear the full cost of the energy and water required to run the facility. The project reflects Meta’s continued commitment to strengthening its presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital markets.
As part of the broader initiative, Meta has also secured nearly 1 gigawatt of new clean energy capacity in India through agreements with renewable energy providers. This includes 837 megawatts of new solar and wind projects being developed in Rajasthan and Karnataka through CleanMax. The latest arrangement raises the total renewable energy capacity announced with CleanMax to more than 900 megawatts.
Reliance Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani said the partnership marks an important step for India’s digital infrastructure sector and demonstrates the country’s readiness to play a leading role in the global AI industry. He added that Reliance aims to build world-class infrastructure that supports future AI innovation.
The latest agreement builds on the relationship between the two companies, which began when Meta invested more than $5.7 billion in Jio Platforms in 2020. Their collaboration expanded, through new initiatives aimed at getting AI technologies into Indian businesses and for developers as well.
