In the vast and ever-evolving landscape of India’s iron and steel industry, where legacy meets relentless transformation, a few stories stand out for their grit, reinvention, and forward-thinking vision. One of them is the adventure of the Cosmic Birla Group. With a legacy of 90 years entrepreneurial success, the group continues to redefine itself against the realities of a changing market and in doing so, has emerged as one of The Leading Iron & Steel Companies of India 2026.
Since the very vision of R.S. Birla up to the contemporary, active leadership of Aditya Vikram Birla, the history of the group is the history of the Indian industrial development. It is a story that is characterized not only by growth in industries, but by being able to survive through the recession, adjust to change and come out better.
With the steel sector challenged by uncertainties and changing economic times, the group has turned it into an opportunity and emerged as a diversified and future-proof company. Cosmic Birla Group and others are a part of the leading iron & steel companies in India 2026 to demonstrate what is being done in these areas to develop greater resiliency, innovation and leadership in India’s industrial future.
A Legacy Etched in Steel
The foundation of Cosmic Birla Group rests on the vision and resilience of its founding figures. The journey began with the late R.S. Birla, born on October 2, 1934, in Pilani, Rajasthan a luminary whose business acumen shaped India’s industrial landscape through key positions in the G.D. Birla Group, driving transformative initiatives for CIMMCO International, Gwalior Suitings, and Jiyajeerao Cottons.
In 1975, R.S. Birla co-founded the Cosmic Birla Group alongside Deo Kishan Mohta, driven by a shared vision of innovation, sustainability, and impact. Ravi Kumar Birla furthered this legacy by playing a crucial role in establishing the Ferro Alloy plant in 2005, contributing significantly to the group’s expansion through his expertise in procurement, production, sales, and marketing.
From Learning To Leading, A Journey Of Transformation
The group’s current chapter has been defined by a period of intense transformation. As Aditya’s journey has been one of resilience, learning, and transformation. “I feel I truly found my footing in business only after 2017 or 2018. Before that, the market crash in steel between 2012 and 2017-18 presented significant challenges. We faced tough times and had to overcome several pain points,” he shares candidly.
Those turbulent years forced the group to look beyond its traditional strengths in marketing, sales, and manufacturing into the more complex terrain of financing, banking, and capital markets. “During this period, I had to learn about financing and banking areas I hadn’t been exposed to before. I was 27 at the time, and thankfully, I managed to navigate through it. This experience exposed me rapidly to the financial and capital markets, giving me a comprehensive understanding of how these aspects interplay.” That hard-earned understanding now underpins the group’s sharp financial discipline and strategic agility
Powering India’s Economic Growth
At the heart of the group is Cosmic CRF Ltd, the publicly traded flagship listed on the BSE. In the first half of FY 2024-25, the company reported a 37.19% year-on-year increase in revenue, a 136.03% surge in EBITDA, and a staggering 172.33% rise in PAT. The group’s strategic expansion spans AVB Entech, Comet Technocom, Comet Tradecom, Cosmic Rail Solutions Ltd, Cosmic Steel Castings Ltd, and N S Engineering Pvt Ltd operating across cold-rolled formed sections, railway components, electrical transmission, and defence, alongside real estate, primary steel goods, and FMCG.
The company operates in sectors vital to India’s economic engine railways, automobiles, iron & steel, and engineering goods. “We aim to be one of the largest contributors in each of these sectors, ensuring India’s industrial growth is on an upward trajectory,” he states.
Innovation, Technology, and the EV Revolution
The group has embraced digital transformation through AVB Entech, building a comprehensive technology infrastructure ERP, CRM, Business Support Software, and Operations Support Software for managing EV rental deals in B2B and B2G segments. “Our investment in technology is not just about automation; it’s about creating intelligence-driven solutions that drive efficiency and competitiveness,”he elaborates.
A standout highlight is Raft Cosmic EV, the group’s foray into the electric vehicle space. With a network of 92 dealers across India, it is spearheading India’s EV revolution. Through strategic partnerships with Zomato and Swiggy for leasing and renting EV bikes, the company is also fostering sustainable last-mile delivery powerfully aligning with global ESG goals.
Navigating Challenges: Turning Adversity into Opportunity
The liquidation of Cosmic Ferro Alloys was a significant setback but Aditya turned it into a turning point for the group. “The liquidation of Cosmic Ferro Alloys was a tough pill to swallow. But we saw it as an opportunity to rebuild, rethink, and realign our strategy. We did not let this define us instead, we fought back with unwavering grit and emerged stronger than ever,”he reflects.
Within just eight months of acquiring Cosmic CRF Ltd, the group listed it on the BSE. Initially valued at ₹128–130 crores, it now stands at ₹2,000–2,100 crores an exponential rise within 11 to 12 months of listing. “Despite the competition, we’re not significantly impacted by any specific competitors. In fact, we’re often seen as disruptors in the market due to our rapid growth,”he asserts.
A Bold Perspective on Business in Bengal
Cosmic Birla Group operates 12 factories in Bengal and actively challenges the prevailing narrative that the region is a difficult place to do business. “The cost of raw materials, power, and labour in Bengal is lower than in other parts of India, giving businesses a strong competitive advantage,” he states, pointing to Bengal’s strategic location, abundant raw materials, strong railway network, and proximity to international markets as underutilised assets.
Vision for the Future
The company is on an aggressive expansion path. Cosmic Steel Castings Ltd is developing a greenfield project with an annual capacity of 30,000 metric tons for railway products and export markets. Cosmic Castings Ltd is evolving into an integrated wagon builder, with a state-of-the-art facility in Durgapur, WB, backed by INR 250 crores. Under Cosmic Springs and Engineers Ltd, a spring manufacturing facility at Jangalpur, WB, will produce CANSUB springs for railway bogeys and wagons.
The company’s success is anchored in a 360-degree customer solution model backward and forward integration ensures wagon manufacturers and EPC contractors face zero production delays. “We strongly believe in creating a human asset talent pool. Talent development is at the core of our strategy because, ultimately, businesses grow when people grow,” he affirms. On sustainability, the group actively pursues green steel, eco-friendly transport, energy audits, solar panels, rainwater harvesting, and CSR initiatives including blood donation camps and tree plantation drives.
The Principles That Define Success
The philosophy guiding company’s growth is straightforward and demanding. As Aditya shared in a session at Harvard: “As an entrepreneur and industrialist, with all the success I’ve seen in the last few years, I can confidently say that no institution can teach you how to do business or multiply wealth. That can only happen through the way you choose to function. You must set up targets with strict timelines supported by bar charts, PERT charts, and Gantt charts. The two keywords are integrity and vision. If you work on them day in and day out, they will determine your success or failure.”
The Saga Continues…
Cosmic Birla Group’s story is one of vision, perseverance, and disruptive innovation. The group has not only redefined industries it has emerged as a force for sustainable industrial progress in India. As it continues to chart new territories, its journey stands as a powerful example of what a legacy enterprise can achieve when it refuses to stand still. With a firm commitment to excellence, sustainability, and strategic expansion, Cosmic Birla Group is undoubtedly among The Leading Iron & Steel Companies of India 2026.
